What is Chiropractic?

“Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts which is concerned with human health and disease processes. Doctors of Chiropractic are physicians who consider man as an integrated being and give special attention to the physiological and biochemical aspects including structural, spinal, musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular, psychological, nutritional, visceral, emotional and environmental relationships and are trained in diagnosis so they may treat patients effectively and make timely referral to appropriate health care providers.

The practice and procedures which may be employed by Doctors of Chiropractic (chiropractic physicians) are based on the academic and clinical training received in and through accredited chiropractic colleges and include, but are not limited to, the use of current diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Such procedures specifically include the adjustment and manipulation of the articulations and adjacent tissues of the human body, particularly of the spinal column. Included is the treatment of intersegmental aberrations for alleviation of related functional disorders.
Chiropractic is a drug-free, non-surgical science and, as such, does not include pharmaceuticals* or incisive surgery.” – The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) Master Plan

Ice therapy (cryotherapy)
This is used commonly following muscle strains and contusions. Ice, compression and elevation of the affected limb for reduction of swelling and alleviation of pain in the inflammatory stage.

Ultrasound at 1 MHz and 3.3 MHz Pulsed and Continuous
Deep heating modality commonly applied alone or after cooling (with a cold spray or ice), or heating of the treatment area. Studies on rats show more regular, denser and better aligned collagen fibres in pulsed ultrasound-treated healing tendons. Ultrasound of 3 MHz produce both vigorous heating and an absolute temperature of 40 ºC at 4 mins. During treatment, the perception of heat here is appreciably milder than in the application of heat therapy.

  Spinal manipulative therapy
This is characterized by high velocity low amplitude thrusts, the hallmark of chiropractic adjustments. The faster the speed of the adjustment, the smaller the force required to effect a release. In infants, chiropractic adjustments are frequently performed using an Activator or paediatric touch and hold techniques.

Chiropractic adjustments should be differentiated from adjustments performed by Chinese physicians, osteopaths and barbers untrained in manipulative therapy for treatment. Risk assessment is made by the chiropractor who makes a clinical judgment on safety issues.

Most chiropractors use Diversified chiropractic adjustive techniques. In this clinic, toggle techniqes are used, alongside mechanical blocking of the pelvis and modified drop techniques.

  Principles of KinesioTaping
Used by sports chiropractors and physical therapists for supporting sprained joints without compromise to joint mobility – for recent media coverage during the Beijing Olympics 2008 see www.kinesiotaping.com. It enhances sports performance during the recovery period and speeds up the healing process by improving lymph flow under the taped area. Also used during and post pregnancy.

associated with flat feet
Taping for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Fascial unwinding
This is fascial unwinding as introduced by Carol Phillips, DC, particularly useful in instances where patients are apprehensive about receiving chiropractic adjustments to the neck or where there are contraindications. In conjunction with cranio-sacral therapy, this technique achieves results with only light pressure making it ideal for infants, pregnant mums and post-trauma victims.

Core stabilization exercises for the athlete, post-pregnancy
For rehabilitation and prevention of future recurrence of injury. We utilize foam roller exercises for the athlete and for improvement of posture. Post-pregnancy, core stabilization is important for reduction of stress to the low back.

  Corrective exercises for scoliosis
We have designed proprioceptive exercises specific to the growing teen.

Neurodynamic and McKenzie exercises for sciatica
There is a significant overlap in this area between therapy done by physical therapists and chiropractic rehabilitative exercises.
